However, most of these strategies don’t increase the odds by much.<\/p>\n In the United States, about two percent of state revenues are generated by lotteries. That’s a significant amount, but not enough to significantly reduce tax rates or bolster state budgets. Some of these revenues are used to pay for things like education, transportation, and crime reduction.<\/p>\n Many people buy lottery tickets for the entertainment value, a small sliver of hope that they will win, and the sense of being lucky. But, they also know that there is a high probability of losing. So, why do they do it?<\/p>\n Some say that it is simply human nature to gamble, and the government needs to offer lotteries in order to raise money. But, is that really the case?
