Poker is a card game involving betting, played by two or more players. It has many variants, and players may win by betting that they hold the best hand, or by bluffing. The game has a long and varied history. It is believed to have developed from a 16th-century German game called pochen into a French version known as poque and later into the American game of three-card brag, which in turn was an early variation of the Spanish game primero. Today, poker is played worldwide.<\/p>\n
Generally speaking, each player in turn places an amount of chips into the pot (representing money) according to the rules of the particular poker game being played. In some games, before cards are even dealt, one player must place an initial contribution, known as an ante, into the pot.<\/p>\n
Once each player has placed his or her ante, the cards are dealt in one or more betting intervals. When it is the player\u2019s turn to bet, he must place enough chips into the pot equal to or higher than the total contributed by the player before him.<\/p>\n
It is important for experienced poker players to read their opponents. This involves paying attention to subtle physical poker tells and analyzing players\u2019 betting habits. For example, a player who raises every time is usually not bluffing and is probably holding a strong hand. On the other hand, a player who checks frequently is often holding a weak hand and should be raised by other players.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
