A slot (narrow aperture or groove) is a place for something, especially a key in a lock or the hole in the bottom of a can or bottle. A slot can also refer to an allocation of time or space, as in the case of a reservation at a restaurant or of an airline seat.

Historically, slot machines used revolving mechanical reels to display and determine results. Three physical reels had only 103 = 1,000 possible combinations, which was insufficient to make the machines profitable. The advent of video slots that could display multiple symbols on each screen allowed manufacturers to offer jackpots that were significantly larger.
A machine’s pay table lists how much a player will win if certain symbols line up in a winning combination. Often, the table will highlight special symbols that can substitute for other symbols to create a winning line. In older machines, the pay tables were printed on the face of the machine; in newer ones they are usually displayed inside a help menu.
Airline slot is the right to operate at a given airport at a scheduled time, granted by an aviation authority.
